Evidence suggests there are 5 steps you can take to help improve your mental health and wellbeing, these are connect, be active, take notice, keep learning and give. The problem is children do not remember these.
We need to maintain a healthy stress level and give children the tools to help reduce their own stress levels. Once children know these tools, then they are equipped for life. SMILERS is a memorable way for children to remember how to support their own mental health and wellbeing. The school's anti-stigma ambassadors have been a major part in training and leading this initiative.
“There has never been a more crucial time to support our schools and equip our teachers, to build emotional resilience in our children & young people. The mental health of our children is eroding before our eyes…we need to bring back their SMILE. These are perfect resources for implementing a Recovery Curriculum .” Professor Barry Carpenter, CBE, PhD.
Professor of Mental Health in Education, Oxford Brookes University. (January 2020)
We launched SMILERS on the 31st of March 2022. We had timetabled street dance sessions and we had a visit from Walter, Our Wellbeing Owl. All classes also now have a SMILERS station.
